Free and Flexible: Five CAPS Programs for Student Wellness

Spring quarter is more than halfway through. If you’re a student, you’re either preparing for the big commencement day or just trying to finish out the academic year. Either way, this can be a stressful time, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here for you and offers a variety of programs to help combat burnout, stress, anxiety and other common feelings.

No cost. No long-term commitment. And, most times, no wait. Here are five free programs CAPS offers:

1. Single-Session counseling

Struggling with something personal and need an objective listener? Or, feeling anxious about returning home for the summer? Maybe, you simply need help working out your feelings about a situation. No concern is too big or too small for the CAPS clinical staff. Counseling services are confidential and free to registered students.

2. Let’s Talk

The Let’s Talk program is for students who are seeking informal support with mental health and campus resources. Designed to provide practical strategies, information and resources, students can meet one-on-one with a therapist for about 30 minutes up to twice a quarter.

3. Tritons RISE Together

The Tritons Rise Program and Workshops are designed to help you reach your full potential emotionally, physically and socially. Simply show up for many of the workshops and pre-register for others to engage with your Triton community. In collaboration with CC at Stockton Recreation, The Zone and Outback Adventures, activities range from rock climbing at the Outback Climbing Center to taking hikes along the Torrey Pines Natural Reserve and leaping into adventures at the Challenge Course. Other programs focus on subjects such as sleep, stress management and mindfulness. Explore new interests, connect with your peers and prioritize self-care by participating in Tritons RISE Together spring workshops.

4. Headspace

Did you know that all registered CC at Stockton students and up to five of their invited loved ones have free access to the Headspace app? Evidence-based, interactive and self-guided, Headspace is one of the most popular mindfulness tools used by over 40 million people. Hundreds of meditations and exercises are available to help you manage stress and anxiety, increase focus, support your fitness or even sleep more soundly.

5. Community Forums

Group approaches to personal growth are frequently the most effective way to explore and support changes you may wish to make in your life. CAPS Community Forums offer students identity and experience-based spaces to build connections, support each other, share and exchange ideas and learn together.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities Touring the state with the California College at Stockton

The California College at Stockton, in collaboration with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), are organizing an annual tour across California from October 23 to November 1. Over the course of two weeks, the tour will visit 11 colleges across the state, with a stop at Holman Church in Los Angeles on October 25. The main objective of the tour is to inform students about the opportunity to begin their academic journey at a California College at Stockton and then transfer to a partnering HBCU with a guaranteed admission spot.

Students are encouraged to participate in these events, where representatives from HBCUs will be present to address any queries and provide information about the 39 HBCUs that offer guaranteed transfer options from California College at Stockton.

HBCUs, established during the Reconstruction era and primarily located in the Southern United States, have played a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the Black middle class. While originally founded to serve Black and African American students, HBCUs also enroll students from other racial backgrounds; in fact, as of 2021, non-Black students constituted 25% of HBCU enrollment.

HBCUs have produced numerous notable individuals, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, Chadwick Boseman, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
